the svelte selection – Favourites of 2011

Oh gosh, 2011 is nearly over. Who’d a thunk. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year for me – after completely losing my musical mojo in the early part of the year, it picked up by festival time, but has fluctuated wildly since.

the svelte selection – 27 October 2011

With thanks to Steven Shingler (photographer)

What a glorious month! Firstly, Had the svelte mum over to visit, went to Ireland, visiting friends and family, went to some good gigs, booked a whole bunch more. AND the radio show didn’t decide to implode technically on me, which was nice. In fact, I’m rather proud of this one.

You can download the show from here or grab from Spotify here.

Enjoy, yeah?

Meet The DJ #4 – Sherlock Ohms

CNV00006 Name: Sherlock Ohms

How many years in the game? : About 3,  so not many really, especially considering some of the other old gimmers on Purple Radio, but I have always been involved in music,  both playing and listening …

What got you into DJing? :

A combination of things really. I’d thought about getting involved in DJing years previously, but the only kids that played at my school were a bunch of coked up fuckwits playing bad trance and over-analysing the latest Judge Jules mix in the common room endlessly which put me right off.

My mind was changed after hearing The Nextmen’sPersonal Golf Instructions, from Driver Thru Putter‘ where they managed to smash their way through half a dozen genres in full bore party starting style, showing that it was possible to combine my love of old funk and soul, as well as more modern hip hop and breaks cuts in a coherent fashion.

Next a mate of mine, Ollie  (from Bristol noisemongers The Gooch) informed me of the existence of a peice of software called Traktor, which meant I didn’t have to start attempting to replicate my mp3 collection in vinyl form.

Finally I heard the Purple Radio Takeover of Big Chill Radio at the festival a few years back and decided it looked like far too much fun to be ignored – I told them I’d be back playing with them the following year, and I wasn’t too far wrong .

Describe your style: As the card says, I aim to bring you the finest in funksoulhiphopreggaebreakybasswobble – so it’s a bit all over the shop. The unifying factor tends to be having an interesting drum line, as I played kit for a decade before I ever got my hands on a pair of turntables.

Do you play out?: Whenever I get the chance! Mostly in and around Bristol, so you’ll likely find me playing at the Big Chill Bristol bar, Bocabar, the Pipe & Slippers and anywhere else they’ll have me …

Kit, (for the nerds!): I’m currently using Traktor Scratch Pro 2 controlled by a 2x Technics 1210s and a Vestax VCI100SE running Ean Golden’s DJTechtools midi mapping. I’ve modded the controller to run some different firmware and as I had the box open to do that I’ve also added a Pro-X Crossfader.

Yes,  I am a bit of a gear whore …

DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: The aforementioned Nextmen obviously & Mr Scruff just for their sheer musical eclecticism, J Dilla & Pete Rock for their sublime production skills and James Brown ..well, for being James Brown

First record bought: I didn’t really start buying vinyl until recently, and that’s only because there are some tracks I can only get that way so it’s a bit of a duff question for me  - according to my Mum I did have a copy of the Wombles on 7″, but I don’t think I bought that …

As far as CD & tapes go,  I used to be a complete and utter Metal fan when I started buying music, so it was Guns N Roses / November Rain as the first single, and Soundgarden / Superunknown for the first album.

Best DJing moment: I’m still a little green when it comes to playing out compared to some round here, but I reckon playing on the main stage of Festinho, just before Ugly Duckling last year has got to rate pretty highly, as I’m a huge fan of theirs.

Name drop for us: I can be found drinking beer and playing tunes with  Ninja Tune resident DJ Moneyshot most Thursdays at the Flipzilla night at the Pipe and Slippers in Bristol …

Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : You can find links to them on Soundcloud and up on the Sherlock Ohms blog

Current dancefloor killer: Featurecast /Sniper for sure … mashing up Pharoah Monche / Simon Says and the Ganja Kru / Super Sharp Shooter was inspired

All time top 5: Gah  - I hate doing things like this, there are so many great records. OK, first 5 off the top of my head …

Aretha Franklin / Rocksteady
The Pharcyde / ‘93 Til Infinity
Stevie Wonder / Superstition
Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth / They Reminisce Over You
Roots Manuva / Witness (One Hope)

What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : I think the bloke puking down the back of the girl in front of him last time I played at the Thekla was probably the grimmest thing I’ve ever seen – he kept on dancing as well!

And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: I’m on fortnightly Tuesdays 10pm-12pm

Meet the DJ #1 – Mr Black

Ahoy!

Welcome to the first in a new series of ‘meet the DJ’ style interviews, where you’ll get to know a little bit more about your Purple Radio idols. I’ll be donning the Jeremy Paxman hat (and accompanying sneer) for this series, so sit down, get a brew on, and prepare to be astounded, amazed and no doubt occasionally appalled at the antics of some of the miscreants that spin records on Purple Radio.

First up it has to be the man, the legend, the head honcho of Purple Radio, it’s the self proclaimed aging diso-dolly/mindless killing machine, Mr Black!

the svelte vaults – 13 May 2010

Today marked the first in a irregular series – the svelte vaults – where I play old tunes from the depths my CD collection. I’m going through the process of ripping it all to mp3, you see, and thus have plenty of rediscovered gems to get out there.
