Got one of these from Amazon

http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/Products/ ... /index.htm

Sounds great. Easy to use. Only downside is it doesn't display what is playing on PR although it does for lots of other web stations.

Mine is an expensive recommendation, but when I got my ipad several weeks ago, I had no idea just how it was going to revolutionise my Purple Radio listening. I also got a speaker/stand system for it (mainly as I seem to have lost my previous Altec Lansing portable ipod speakers, and we were going on holiday) http://international.alteclansing.com/u ... =octiv_450 and together its a dream. Especially with the added benefit of the Radio Box app http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/internet ... 23806?mt=8. Its not like it wouldn't play the Internet Radio on the ipad without the app, but on sunday, even though we could get it normally, the ipad wouldn't play it. With the app perfect - and now we have a sleep timer as well as another bunch of cool features.

Purple Radio is now standard in the kitchen (you couldn't hear the front room speakers from there) and is easy to move to bedroom, or garden or anywhere else + as you can browse the web at the same time you can be active on the shoutbox. It has totally changed our plans to get an internet radio, and we hadn't planned it that way at all.

ipads are alright but for that money you may as well buy a Windows laptop. or a notebook (for half the money).

or a REALLY kick-ass wi-fi radio. ;)

Yeah you can, but when you are developing websites for folks and need to test them on ipads (cause they are paying you too), it's best to actually have an ipad ;)

For what it's worth, I adore mine, and it was only really bought for the testing thing + the ability to support clients when on holiday without having to take a laptop everywhere. Its such a dream to not have to lug a laptop into town everytime I have a meeting and despite taking the utter mickey out of them when they were released they are very functional and enjoyable to use. I don't remember the last time I said that about my computer or laptop!

It's also the multi use thing. As well as having the kindle app, and therefore a library wherever I am, I can watch iplayer or other streaming telly, use it as an internet radio, great for playing music at a decent volume either at home or holiday. I can support my clients, send/recieve email, browse the internet. Take it to the kitchen and follow a recipe. It's just light, functional and easy. I've had a laptop for years and never done half the things I use the ipad for.

edited to add: it may also help that I bought mine through my company - so was considerably cheaper without the vat!

well of course that's fair enough, but when the modus operandi is "internet radio listening" it seems a little overkill. ;)

plus you can write it off on expenses, which is a joy. :D

i think they're fun but i don't require convenience (i have my phone for that), i need power. and unfortunately the ipads just don't have the power to do anything worthwhile with yet. Apple have really pissed me off tbh - i was about to go into the Macbook market then they decided to axe the standard Macbook, shift the price of the (far less powerful) Macbook Air down to what the former Macbook was, THEN upped the prices on the Macbook Pros.

which effectively priced me out of their market.

all of that "Jobs was a hero for making computers more accessible and easier for people" is bullshit. if he'd cared about accessibility for the people his products wouldn't have been so fcuking expensive. and if "they're simpler", again - why so expensive?? it's one of the biggest Emporer's new clothes of modern times. :)

I struggled with this to then I read something to the effect that most computer nerds have no idea what's simple for the common user so when Apple finds nerds that do they have to pay them more money.

I use my iPhone for my internet radio. Hooked to a good dock or speaker set and it's great.

If all you want is an internet radio then the ipad is clearly too expensive and overkill.. but if you've been thinking of getting one already, or as Chris, have an iphone - then I don't think it should be overlooked as a solution with a good dock or speakers.

I know nothing about actual internet radios though, didn't James get a cracking one?

i'vetried this but it always picks up (and so amplifies) the sound of the data being streamed into the phone - like when you're listening to an i pod and your mobile goes off next to it)

How do you stop this? A quality dock?

Yes - the trick is to get one with shielded speakers

Most likely yes, but if you're on a certain type of network that may have something to do with it. I've never had that problem though and I'm usually just cabled into some Bose computer speakers if I'm not using headphones.

The other nice thing about the phone over a dedicated radio is that I can use it in my car over the bluetooth stereo. If you don't like the phone idea I'm pretty sure an iPod touch would be able all of the above.

Well if this is now turning into the "check out my fancy new gadget thread" I got myself an Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver this week with built-in TuneIn radio. Streams PR to the lounge AND the garden simultaneously.
Listening to Matt Hoods in 5.1 Dolby Digital THX is an experience to behold.

+1 for iPad and Tunein radio app.

Perfect stream, good sound and album covers. What more does a PR listener need :)
