Had a proper listen to my Scott 1 mono vinyl last night - s'gorgeous.
Bohannon's Too Hot To Hold is feckin marvellous: side 1 is three great slices of relentless hard funk, side 2 more disco and soulful. It's really odd that the only thing in print of his is a best of, The Collection (admittedly ace, and only a few quid from amazon).
Also picked up that Bob Blank compilation on Strut cheap, which contains some crackers (and some, shall we say, of their time tracks).
Oh, and after hearing him on James' show, got the first two Tropics EPs - some beauts on those.
And more Can related expense might be on it's way - spotted three semi legit live albums are due soon

Oh, and got a copy of Stan Kenton conducts the Los Angeles Neophonic Orchestra cheap (ex library copy, but in excellent nick), largely as it's produced by Sir David of Axelrod. Nicely overblown* bit of orchestral jazz.

*overblown, Axelrod - surely not

The 2CD and DVD reissue of The Beat - Special Beat Service turned up yesterday, and is pretty great. Oddly an album of theirs that I've not owned before - not sure why tbh.
Only the reissue of W'Happen to get now.

They really were a great pop band.

A few new ones from me:

Idjut Boys - Cellar Door
Only on a few listens, but sounding good. A couple are a little bland, but 'Song For Kenny' is a terrific record. Electro-chugs into a right sunset bliss out. Lovely tribute for Kenny Hawkes too. Have a go on it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkQ4nw_00Lo

Grasscut - Unearth
Ninja are growing old, and I like it. This is a really pastoral record, and the spirit of Ultramarine is reinforced by a guest vocal from Robert Wyatt. A bit of FourTet and Bibio in there too. Standout for me, though, is We Fold Ourselves.

Beachwood Sparks - Tarnished Gold
Poppy Americana. Loads of hooks, really warm, recommended. Perfect for Blackie's new show. Try this one for size:

Caning the new Claremont 56 compilation - loads of stuff I already had, but some new ones for me that really hit the spot.

Felix Dickinson's mix of Almunia, especially.

Looks like it's a year old. That's how 'with it' I am. Still, it's dead good.

Completed my The Beat reissues collection today, as Whappen fell onto the doormat.
Also got given a copy of Aretha Franklin - Rare & Unreleased Recordings, which is obv great.
Just this minute picked up a first press of Scott 3 on ebay - it had better be in the stated condition for the money I've spunked on it. Only Scott 4 to go now (and that'll have a well ouchy price tag).
And a live 1976 Funkadelic DVD is on it's way, which is either going to be awesome, or a sprawling mess (ah well, it was only a couple of quid).

Not new music, old music....

My Roxy Music boxset turned up yesterday - all 8 albums, plus 2 discs of b-sides and extended versions.

Oh yes.

It's ace innit - shame it's not on the reissues.

Finally got a copy of George Faith's To Be A Lover album (though they've renamed it Super Eight for the CD reissue) - a top, slinky, subtle Lee Perry production.

Also *BIG EXCITEMENT* - got a copy of the 2004 vinyl reissue of Scott 4 off ebay over the weekend; which apparently sounds as good as an original press, at a fraction of the price (drums fingers waiting for the postie).

A few things on their way to me:

Brioski - Hype Nothing, kinda Emperor Machine/Italo gubbins laden with old analog synths
Hamilton Bohannon - Dance Your Ass Off, more dirty relentless funk tunes
Paul Buchanan - Mid Air, first solo album from The Blue Nile's frontman
Queen Elizabeth - Queen Elizabeth, spacey krautrock synth jams from Julian Cope and Thighpaulsandra - could be great, could be noodley bollox (it was only a couple of quid, so I figured it was worth a punt)

Oh, and for any Chicken Lips fans, their new 7 track EP is available on itunes for 1.79 (which I'm guessing is a mistake) - the Headman and Emperor Machine mixes are sounding ace on first listen.

Kinnell, the Scott Walker vinyls sound immense - and I find it hard to believe that an original press of Scott 4 will beat the 2004 reissue (which is excellent news considering it was an eighth of the price).

Shriekback - Jam Science (the earlier Y Records version - interesting, but the Arista issue's better I reckon)
A lovely first press of Robert Palmer - Sneaking Sally Through The Alley fro 4 quid - bargain
Peter Sellers - Songs For Swinging Sellers, tbh just for the cover to frame it (only a quid as well)

1 is probably the best in a tune for tune battle, however 2 has a couple of absolute corkers and this third instalment also has the amazing to the damn weird. 2 and 3 concentrate on the european side of things where as 1 is a selection from american artists.

I can't recommend the series highly enough and the sleeve notes give some good reading as a cherry :D

It's just dawned on me that I had a listen to Volume 2 after someone else recommended it, and I liked that one too.
Hmmm, I've already bought loads of music recently, but might have to rack em in (ah well, payday was yesterday after all)

Today the postie brought a triffic ebay bargain, Shriekback - The Infinite on CD, which saves me having to digitise a couple of 12"s for a future show.
