Purple Radio welcomes Seekmagic

Seekmagic began in October 2009 as a music blog , (www.seekmagic.wordpress.com), created as an outlet for the various mixtapes that friends, Nick Cubley (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Gavin Botton (London) had been making for various friends. The duo met in 2005 over an internet forum for Liverpool band, Shack (www.shacknet.co.uk).

“We quickly realised that we had more than just this one band in common. We were born in the same year, so we found many musical touchstones that had been part of our mutual journey of musical discovery,” says Nick.

The popularity of the blog continued to develop “through the support of friends and acquaintances”, and spiralled when the duo were asked to provide a guest slot on Sean Rowley’s BBC Radio show, ‘The Joy Of Music’.

“Sean’s show has always been a massive influence to us musically. The eclectism and ‘no boundaries’ approach was something we definitely wanted to bring to our sets. So, to be asked by him to do a guest slot was a big turning point.”

The blog hits “went nuclear” and it wasn’t long before the pair launched their promotions side of Seekmagic, with the first ‘Seekmagic Sunday’ at The Social in London last month, which featured Nouveau-folkie John Stammers, the latin-tinged acoustic psych of Amor De Dias and the sunshine pop of The Superimposers. “We really wanted to put on a special gig with British artists that we felt were under-represented. We don’t want to put gigs on all the time, but there will definitely be more, both in London and Newcastle.”

So, expect a seamless eclectic mix of music every fortnight. Americana, soundtracks, soul, folk, psych pop, Balearic grooves, Anything that provides the magic, basically.

Sundays, fortnightly 2pm -3.30pm

Been meaning to post this for ages but the recent (off the scale) Leftside Wobble edit of this amazing dancefloor bomb gave me a much needed kick up the arse to dig it out and rip at full fat 320 kbps for your listening pleasure.

With thanks to Steven Shingler (photographer)

What a glorious month! Firstly, Had the svelte mum over to visit, went to Ireland, visiting friends and family, went to some good gigs, booked a whole bunch more. AND the radio show didn’t decide to implode technically on me, which was nice. In fact, I’m rather proud of this one.

You can download the show from here or grab from Spotify here.

Enjoy, yeah?

the svelte selection – 1 September 2011

I want to start this blog by saying that tonsillitis SUCKS. Tonsillitis really fucking sucks. It REALLY FUCKING SUCKS.

Look, even Charlie Brooker agrees with me. And he’s right about a lot of stuff.

Why is this important? Well, it explains a few things:

    a. Why this show is being uploaded over a week after the broadcast

    b. Why the show itself is almost 100% devoid of my talking

    c. Why I’m at home on a Friday night writing this blog rather than seeing the wonderful Adam Buxton at Kings Place

Some of the above may well be a blessing to y’all, but they’ve all pissed me off to a rather large extent.

To reiterate: tonsillitis SUCKS.

Meet the DJ #8 – Supine

tylerName: Tyler

How many years in the game? : 40

What got you into DJing? : Pressing play for my mate Neil at a funk night in Cardiff. Plus buying records like a maniac since I bought my first turntable in 1985.

First Turntable? Was it a Fisher Price one?: Cheeky fucker! It was a Denon or something. I didn’t get 1200’s until December 30th 1999 a just in time for a NYE party.

Describe your style: Shambolic. Deep house/disco/rare groove.

Do you play out?: Yes, not much – just the occassional party / bar / festival.

Kit, (for the nerds!): Two CDJ’s because I can’t be arsed to carry record bags around. Vinyl if I REALLY need to Smile

DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: Ahhh, so many. Big Name DJ’s I worship include Francois Kervorkian, Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Digs & Woosh, Laurent Garnier, David Mancuso, Paul Trouble Anderson, Luke Vibert, Trentemoller, Tom Middleton, Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Swayzak, Ivan Smagghe, DJ Harvey, Dixon, Andy Weatherall, Nicky Blackmarket, Ray Keith, Bones, DJ Food and most definately Daniele Baldelli.

Just as importantly more underground DJ’s who have totally inspired me include Peej & Fran, Matt & Neil Phantom, Rick Donaghue, Psycle Crew, Rico, Trasca, Jay from Falling Up, Futureboogie and Daniel Donnachie.

First record bought: The Fame LP. The first proper record was Dennis Edwards & Siedah Garrett – Don’t look any further

Best DJing moment: A toss up between playing at Juice Joint in Cardiff & the full moon party in Thailand. Probably Juice Joint as it was a club I absolutely loved and respected due to the brilliant resident Chris Jenkins & his excellent musical choices. Sublime Smile

Name drop for us: I got hit in the nuts by Kelis. It was an accident I’ll never forget.

Hit in the nuts by Kelis – what the hell were you doing to her?: Haha, just walking past her. I was at the bar at Top Of The Pops during filming. She was gesticulating some story to her entourage, as i walked past she hit me down below. She apologised and I probably just looked like some kind of stunned rabbit staring into the headlights of a fast approaching car. She’s a babe!

Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : Purple Radio / Soundcloud

Current dancefloor killer: Aretha Franklin – Mr DJ

All time top 5: No chance!

What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : Somebody pooing themself while wearing shorts in the middle of a dancefloor. Apart from that I love Croatia!

And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: I’ll check my diary – it’s a classic 1987 filofax so not very reliable. Always late at night though
