the svelte selection – Favourites of 2011
Oh gosh, 2011 is nearly over. Who’d a thunk. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year for me – after completely losing my musical mojo in the early part of the year, it picked up by festival time, but has fluctuated wildly since.
Tonight’s show was the review of 2011, though there’s not much reviewing going on – tis mostly just tunes and me saying I love them… You know you want it, download the whole show from here, or check the Spotify playlist over here.

Purple Radio welcomes Seekmagic
Seekmagic began in October 2009 as a music blog , (www.seekmagic.wordpress.com), created as an outlet for the various mixtapes that friends, Nick Cubley (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Gavin Botton (London) had been making for various friends. The duo met in 2005 over an internet forum for Liverpool band, Shack (www.shacknet.co.uk).
“We quickly realised that we had more than just this one band in common. We were born in the same year, so we found many musical touchstones that had been part of our mutual journey of musical discovery,” says Nick.
The popularity of the blog continued to develop “through the support of friends and acquaintances”, and spiralled when the duo were asked to provide a guest slot on Sean Rowley’s BBC Radio show, ‘The Joy Of Music’.
“Sean’s show has always been a massive influence to us musically. The eclectism and ‘no boundaries’ approach was something we definitely wanted to bring to our sets. So, to be asked by him to do a guest slot was a big turning point.”
The blog hits “went nuclear” and it wasn’t long before the pair launched their promotions side of Seekmagic, with the first ‘Seekmagic Sunday’ at The Social in London last month, which featured Nouveau-folkie John Stammers, the latin-tinged acoustic psych of Amor De Dias and the sunshine pop of The Superimposers. “We really wanted to put on a special gig with British artists that we felt were under-represented. We don’t want to put gigs on all the time, but there will definitely be more, both in London and Newcastle.”
So, expect a seamless eclectic mix of music every fortnight. Americana, soundtracks, soul, folk, psych pop, Balearic grooves, Anything that provides the magic, basically.
Sundays, fortnightly 2pm -3.30pm
Ashford and Simpson ~ Don’t Cost You Nothing (12″ disco mix)
Ashford and Simpson ~ Don’t Cost You Nothing (12″ disco mix)

Been meaning to post this for ages but the recent (off the scale) Leftside Wobble edit of this amazing dancefloor bomb gave me a much needed kick up the arse to dig it out and rip at full fat 320 kbps for your listening pleasure.
Turn it up!

What a glorious month! Firstly, Had the svelte mum over to visit, went to Ireland, visiting friends and family, went to some good gigs, booked a whole bunch more. AND the radio show didn’t decide to implode technically on me, which was nice. In fact, I’m rather proud of this one.
You can download the show from here or grab from Spotify here.
Enjoy, yeah?

the svelte selection – 1 September 2011
I want to start this blog by saying that tonsillitis SUCKS. Tonsillitis really fucking sucks. It REALLY FUCKING SUCKS.
Look, even Charlie Brooker agrees with me. And he’s right about a lot of stuff.
Why is this important? Well, it explains a few things:
- a. Why this show is being uploaded over a week after the broadcast
b. Why the show itself is almost 100% devoid of my talking
c. Why I’m at home on a Friday night writing this blog rather than seeing the wonderful Adam Buxton at Kings Place
Some of the above may well be a blessing to y’all, but they’ve all pissed me off to a rather large extent.
To reiterate: tonsillitis SUCKS.
So, now we’re past that little rant and we’re coping (maybe), let me introduce to you the latest edition of the svelte selection. This month had to cover two major festivals (The Big Chill and Green Man) plus a range of new albums, gigs attended and gigs upcoming. Usually you’d get the details of each during the show, but due to the lack of mic action, I’m going to give a little commentary via the tracklisting instead.
You can download the show from here (sorry it’s so slow. I will get around to podcasting it eventually. I will). There’s a Spotify playlist here.
And, lo, here it is:
1. Evangelista – I lay there in front of me covered in ice from Prince of Truth
- Evangelista’s playing a gig at Cafe Oto on Sunday 13th November.
2. YACHT – Shangri-La from Shangri-la
- Got to see YACHT (briefy) at Secret Garden Party where they played lots of stuff from the new album. This is the title track. It’s fun. And interesting. A nice combo.
3. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat – The Greatest Story Ever Told from Everything’s Getting Older
- STOP PRESS: YOU MUST GO AND BUY THIS ALBUM NOW. IT IS FUCKING AMAZING AND HAS JUMPED INTO THE TOP SPOT FOR 2011 SO FAR.
I’m serious. Buy it now.
Buy it.
Buy it.
Bought it? Good, we can carry on.
4. Stephin Merritt – The Song from Venus from Obscurities
- New release of curiosities from Stephin Merritt – unreleased material, demos, alternative versions and the like. Loads of good stuff for the fans (of which I am most definitely one). Actually, I did a whole radio show about Stephin Merritt once. If you fancy it, you can download it from here.
5. Oh Ruin! – Silver Lining from Silver Lining (single)
- The first track in my Green Man festival section comes from Oh Ruin!, who I first played back in February, after seeing him at Sh! A Celebration of Quiet Music. The band did a wonderful wee set by the Green Man Pub, accompanied on a couple of tracks by the vocalist from She Keeps Bees (see below).
6. James Vincent McMorrow – Sparrow and the Wolf from Sparrow and the Wolf (single)
- This artist was actually suggested to me by a member of the Green Man Forum, and although I didn’t manage to catch him at la festival, I did enjoy listening to the tunes.
7. She Keeps Bees – See Me from Dig On
- First caught at Green Man 2009 on the GM Pub stage, they were promoted to the Main Stage this year and gave an excellent show. This is from the brand new album.
8. Other Lives – For 12 from For 12 (single)
- One of the few bands that I discovered at this year’s Green Man (twas a bit lean musically for once). My tweet at the time labelled them lush orchestral bluesy heavy folk and that seems to fit.
9. Origamibiro – Ballerina Platform Shoes from Shakkei
- Hooray!!! A new Origamibiro album is out! And it’s beautiful! Of course it is. If you are new to them, I recommend going here and Getting Involved immediately.
10. Björk – Cosmogony (Matthew Herbert Remix 1) from The Crystalline Series Cosmogony Matthew Herbert Remixes (single)
- New set of remixes from the wundergal herself. I love her. She’s amazing. &c &c \&c
11. John Mouse – Sex with You from Humber Dogger Forties
- Awesome little track from the bloke that opened the Far Out stage at Green Man. When I played on Green Man Radio, I devoted this tune to the nice man who made me a cup of tea while I was waiting to get my wristband. Tea’s important.
12. Squarepusher – Theme from Sprite from Hello Everything
- Played a good set at Green Man, but I sorta miss the old more fucked up Squarepusher. I’m old. This tune went out to Steve who had his first Squarepusher experience at Green Man and absolutely bloody loved it.
13. Holy Fuck – Lucky from Latin
- Holy Fuck properly OWNED Green Man – one of my two main highlights. My friend Mach V was compering the stage at the time and said it was even more amazing close up.
14. Polar Bear – Peepers from Peepers
- The other major highlight from Green Man. I’ve seen them a couple of times before, but they were just phenomenal on that Far Out Stage. The crowd were absolutely wrapt and Mr Rochford was beaming.
15. Echaskech – Change the Station (ft Napoleon Complex) from Change the Station (single)
- New one from la boys d’Echaskech, featuring a rapper. Yes, really. You can download it for free from here.
16. Shit Robot – Triumph!!! from The Cradle to the Rave
- This was played for my lovely flatmate who defeated the hell that is National Rail bookings and got hold of those tickets she really needed. For you, Jessica.
Also, being a Hot Chip-related project, it’s tenuously linked to the next tune…
17. The 2 Bears – Bear Hug from Bear Hug EP
- The 2 Bears curated the Friday night Far Out After Dark at Green Man this year and although I don’t think it was particularly successful, this is a GREAT tune.
18. The Chemical Brothers – Swoon from Further
- A nod to the Big Chill Festival – which was fine, but not very musically interesting (or busy). Kanye West was a fucking joke, but The Chems more than delivered.
Should mention that the photo above was taken whilst I rocked the Big Chill Radio stage with mavis (and later Ruth) of the Dubwives. We had a phenomenally good time playing bass to the kiddies
19. Breton – RDI (Girl Unit Remix)
- Randomly picked this up off a mix I was sent the other day…
-searches-
Oh yes, here it is. It’s from a Fat Cat records podcast. TUNE as the kids say.
20. Gonzales – Knight Moves (Lone Remix) from Knight Moves (single)
- A remix of a track from the (frankly underwhelming) new one from Chilly. Still, he’s playing a series of gigs at the Soho Theatre in October and you should go. Read here and here for more info on this genius.
21. Remember Remember – Lips from RR Scorpii
- The fabulous Remember Remember will be back in London on 22nd September playing some venue of which I had previously not heard: Servant Jazz Quarters. No presale that I can see, but there’s further info here.
22. Radiohead – Bloom (Blawan RMX) from TKOL RMX5
- From the truly immense remix series that has invited everyone from Fourtet to Harmonic 303 to bring their magic to tracks from The King Of Limbs. Currently available as a series of separate releases, they’ll be consolidated into one come October I’m told.
23. Ghostpoet – Survive It from The Big Chill Live Lounge
- Nice to see that others have picked up on the goodness that is Ghostpoet (I played him first!
Oh, and he didn’t win the Mercury. But that’s not hugely surprising. Hmmm, I really should get around to listening to that PJ Harvey album…
Erm, tangent…
So this tune is dedicated to Paul, Andy, Toby and Seb – the boys that run Big Chill and Green Man Radio. You can find out more about the marvellous organisation behind the goodness over here. Love you guys. A lot.
24. Alice & the Enemies – Touching Boys (In Supermarkets) from Alice & The Enemies
- New (well, recorded back in 2004 but just getting released) punkish joy from those good folks at Ambiguous Records. And it’s something I used to do quite frequently. Frustrated, much?
25. Pulp – Have You Seen Her Lately? from His ‘N’ Hers
- I saw Pulp at Brixton Academy last week. It was, quite simply, absolutely breathtaking. Not only did they replicate most of the festival set they’ve been touring, we got Lipgloss, Bad Cover Version, the marvellous Richard Hawley and this tune. It’s dedicated to Justin who dreamed Pulp play it, and they did.
26. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat – Let’s Stop Here from Everything’s Getting Older
- You’ve all bought this now, yeah? Good. Just checking.
Meet the DJ #8 – Supine
Name: Tyler
How many years in the game? : 40
What got you into DJing? : Pressing play for my mate Neil at a funk night in Cardiff. Plus buying records like a maniac since I bought my first turntable in 1985.
First Turntable? Was it a Fisher Price one?: Cheeky fucker! It was a Denon or something. I didn’t get 1200’s until December 30th 1999 a just in time for a NYE party.
Describe your style: Shambolic. Deep house/disco/rare groove.
Do you play out?: Yes, not much – just the occassional party / bar / festival.
Kit, (for the nerds!): Two CDJ’s because I can’t be arsed to carry record bags around. Vinyl if I REALLY need to ![]()
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: Ahhh, so many. Big Name DJ’s I worship include Francois Kervorkian, Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Digs & Woosh, Laurent Garnier, David Mancuso, Paul Trouble Anderson, Luke Vibert, Trentemoller, Tom Middleton, Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Swayzak, Ivan Smagghe, DJ Harvey, Dixon, Andy Weatherall, Nicky Blackmarket, Ray Keith, Bones, DJ Food and most definately Daniele Baldelli.
Just as importantly more underground DJ’s who have totally inspired me include Peej & Fran, Matt & Neil Phantom, Rick Donaghue, Psycle Crew, Rico, Trasca, Jay from Falling Up, Futureboogie and Daniel Donnachie.
First record bought: The Fame LP. The first proper record was Dennis Edwards & Siedah Garrett – Don’t look any further
Best DJing moment: A toss up between playing at Juice Joint in Cardiff & the full moon party in Thailand. Probably Juice Joint as it was a club I absolutely loved and respected due to the brilliant resident Chris Jenkins & his excellent musical choices. Sublime ![]()
Name drop for us: I got hit in the nuts by Kelis. It was an accident I’ll never forget.
Hit in the nuts by Kelis – what the hell were you doing to her?: Haha, just walking past her. I was at the bar at Top Of The Pops during filming. She was gesticulating some story to her entourage, as i walked past she hit me down below. She apologised and I probably just looked like some kind of stunned rabbit staring into the headlights of a fast approaching car. She’s a babe!
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : Purple Radio / Soundcloud
Current dancefloor killer: Aretha Franklin – Mr DJ
All time top 5: No chance!
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : Somebody pooing themself while wearing shorts in the middle of a dancefloor. Apart from that I love Croatia!
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: I’ll check my diary – it’s a classic 1987 filofax so not very reliable. Always late at night though

Meet The DJ #7 – Reg
Name: Reg aka Minke Reg
How many years in the game? : Have been making music and writing tunes for 25 years, but DJing for the last six years or so.
What got you into DJing? : About six years ago, an opportunity came up to spin some tunes at a new, small festival called ABC / Minichill (which later became known as Festinho). It was a hot summer day, and I was DJing indoors in a barn…to an audience of zero. Still, you gotta start somewhere.
Describe your style: Eclectic, to say the least : electronica, krautrock, old rave, psychedelia, library music, exotica, post punk, eighties synth pop, house, disco, drum and bass, breaks, film soundtracks, dodgy re-edits etc etc etc. “Genre-hopping musical slut” just about sums me up.
Do you play out?: As a DJ : occasionally, yes. As a live AV / electronica act (Minke) : three or four times a year.
Kit, (for the nerds!): One computer, one copy of Acid, one copy of Ableton…..and a mahoosive music collection. All my Purple Radio shows are prerecorded, as I like to treat each show as a “production”.
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: To be honest, I’ve never really followed DJ culture that closely, in spite of having enjoyed countless DJ sets over the years. I’ve always been more interested in the writing and production side of things. People who inspire me : Kraftwerk, Neu! and the whole krautrock era, Orbital, Roxy Music, Martin Rushent, Bent, The B-52’s, Devo, Wire, Fujiya and Miyagi, KPM, Alan Hawkshaw, Working For A Nuclear Free City, Minotaur Shock and loads of others. One DJ who I have seen recently, who blew me away with her brilliance, was Cosmo. Well worth checking out at this year’s Festinho!
First record bought: Oh god, do I really have to tell you ? Erm, it was “Bright Eyes” by Art Garfunkel. In my defence, I was only 11 years old. Thankfully, 2 Tone arrived shortly after that, so my first decent purchase was “Too Much Too Young” by The Specials.
Best DJing moment: Playing at Festinho is always a special occasion. Other than that, it’s nice when I get positive comments from punters, particularly as I don’t always play obvious, “crowd-pleasing” tunes.
Name drop for us: My sister used to work for Andrew Ridgeley. Oh the shame.
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : Check out the “Reg’s Mixes” thread on the Show Downloads section of the Purple Radio site. And on the production side, my website is http://www.minkemusic.co.uk. I also do a lot of re-edits under the Minke Boots pseudonym.
Current dancefloor killer: Cal Tjader – Soul Sauce (Fila Brazillia mix) – an oldie that I’ve only recently discovered.
All time top 5:
Gat Decor – Passion
Kraftwerk – Neon Lights
OMD – Messages
The The – Uncertain Smile
William Orbit – Water From A Vine Leaf
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : Whilst playing a live set at Festinho a couple of years ago, a friend who was in the audience vomited violently. Thankfully, my sets don’t usually elicit that kind of response.
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: Every four weeks on a Sunday at 5.30pm
Meet the DJ #6 – King of the Delta Blues
Name: Bob Johnston aka King of the Delta Blues (Kotdb)
How many years in the game? : DJ’ing for 4 or years now I think. Pretty recent thing for me.
What got you into DJing? : Well I have always been into music in a big way. In the period when I was out all the time when I lived in Glasgow I foolishly didn’t buy my own decks and after that I kind of felt like I had missed my chance. Of course I now realise thats a load of old bollocks. It’s never too late.
The notion to DJ got stronger and stronger and I was always making playlists and compilations for people and when Purple Radio came along I grasped the nettle and had a go. Never looked back.
Describe your style: I like to think I have a pretty broad taste that can suit loads of situations but the stuff I play tends to have an emotional element to it, be it hands in the air uplifting or melancholic. If it tugs at your heartstrings in some way there’s a good chance I’ll like it. I’ve got a liking for folk music, country, blues and old rock and roll. I also love electronic music be it ambient, disco, house, techno or dubstep so the stuff I play is drawn from that heady brew.
Do you play out?: As much as I can. Played at the Big Chill Bar and Big Chill House, Aardvark to Zebra, Funkatarium, The Trip Festival, Festinho, Big Chill and Green Man radio at the festivals.
Kit, (for the nerds!): It was my Hercules MkII midi controller that my wife Gemma and some friends bought me for my birthday that got the ball rolling and although it’s getting a bit old it works well for me. Laptop DJ from the start I did finally get some Technics 1210’s and I have an Allen and Heath Xone 62 mixer.
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: Gilles Peterson’s eclectiscism was a big influence on me as were the Optimo boys from Glasgow. Soma and Slam and the Sub Club also in Glasgow introduced me to Detroit and Chicago and my techno heroes- Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills, Derrick May. Peter Kersten (Lawrence and Sten) is probably my favourite producer from the last few years.
First record bought: I bought three seven inches pretty close together as a kid: Pop Will Eat Itself (I heard it on John Peel), The Anfield Rap and The Hearts Song (my team).
Best DJing moment: Had some brilliant times at the Big Chill Bar on New Years Day and other times. Dropping Little Richard “Long Tall Sally” in the middle of some some big techno tracks and everyone going mental on a Bank Holiday at the Big Chill Bar was probably my favourite moment. One that you imagine in your head as a DJ and then it actually works!
Name drop for us: erm…Ewan Pearson was at my birthday party once. Hmmm not so impressive eh?
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : On my soundcloud page
Current dancefloor killer: Not played out for a few months as I’ve been travelling but before I left Chemise- She can’t love you was the killer.
All time top 5:
Kate Bush- Cloudbusting
Primal Scream- Come Together
Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Ray
Neil Young – Old Man
Daft Punk – Burnin’
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : Well I can’t say I witnessed this as such but I was woken up by a Dublin bouncer while I was on the dancefloor. I was still standing/swaying and holding a pint of Guinness. He ordered me to go to the bar which is a pretty reasonable response if you ask me. I clearly hadn’t had enough to drink.
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: I normally have a weekly show on Purple radio from 6-8pm on a Monday evening but I have been abroad for the past six months and currently my internet is no good for broadcast. I will be back. Oh yes.
Meet the DJ #5 – Sothisis Simon
How many years in the game? : 25 or so years…
What got you into DJing? : Always enjoyed music – classical and contemporary. A community group that supported the school my Dad was the head teacher at had to close due to lack of support/funds. Dad’s school ended up buying all their mobile disco kit so that it could continue to run discos for the kids. I started running them each term… the children loved it. We then started doing more mobile disco stuff – kids parties, 60s/70s discos for local groups and charities etc. Skip on a few years to Uni and I start doing the cheesy student nights at the main bars on campus for 4 years. I also worked the mobile and cheesy club scene for a few years with a group of mates – fun times and reasonably easy money. Meanwhile, early 90s I also started the house stuff… some big parties and smaller residencies kept me busy for the rest of the decade. I managed to carry on for a few years after I returned to the midlands at the turn of the millennium but the reality of bills and a proper job soon put an end to full time DJing.
Describe your style: Given a choice (ie listening on my own) its progressive house, but I enjoy playing anything in the broad and welcoming church that is house – house, disco, techno, hip-hop, DnB, soul, funk, pop, prog, deep, breaks – i really don’t mind as long as i’m having as much fun as those enjoying it on the dancefloor.
Do you play out?: Not as much as I used to… but I try to when I can.
Kit, (for the nerds!): 2 x Technics SL1210Mk2, Vestax PCV-275 (half the channels are bust!), Laptop running TORQ2 plus TORQ Xponent USB DJ Surface, Shure SM58 Mic
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: Pete Tong, Deep Dish, Kraftwerk, Jean Michelle Jarre, Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, my mate Lindsey
First record bought: Was actually a cassette, Kraftwerk’s – The Man Machine Album
Best DJing moment: Warming up for Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, mid 90s, full appreciative crowd and I was mixing well!
Name drop for us: I’m lucky enough to have shared flyer space and DJ booths with Xpress2, Danny Rampling, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Justin Berkman, Luvdup Twins, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, Mark Moore, Angel, Sister Bliss and Nick Warren to name (drop) a few. I also shared a table in the canteen backstage at Tribal Gathering 1997 with Kraftwerk – totally star struck I just starred at them whilst they were planning their next cycling routes!
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : I’ve a couple of straight mixes alongside all my Purple Radio shows in the mixes section of the forum. I was listening to some mixes I did 5-10 years ago thinking I should get them posted as well.
Current dancefloor killer: Matthew Burton – Open Your Soul (Retrofit #2) , a deep techie 120bpm chugger – right up my
street!
All time top 5:
Last Rhythm – Last Rhythm
Underground Solution – Luv Dancin’
Indie – Appolonia
Kraftwerk – Neon Lights
Flock Of Seagulls – Wishing (I Had A Photograph Of You)
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: Every other Wednesday 8-10pm
Meet The DJ #4 – Sherlock Ohms
Name: Sherlock Ohms
How many years in the game? : About 3, so not many really, especially considering some of the other old gimmers on Purple Radio, but I have always been involved in music, both playing and listening …
What got you into DJing? :
A combination of things really. I’d thought about getting involved in DJing years previously, but the only kids that played at my school were a bunch of coked up fuckwits playing bad trance and over-analysing the latest Judge Jules mix in the common room endlessly which put me right off.
My mind was changed after hearing The Nextmen’s ‘Personal Golf Instructions, from Driver Thru Putter‘ where they managed to smash their way through half a dozen genres in full bore party starting style, showing that it was possible to combine my love of old funk and soul, as well as more modern hip hop and breaks cuts in a coherent fashion.
Next a mate of mine, Ollie (from Bristol noisemongers The Gooch) informed me of the existence of a peice of software called Traktor, which meant I didn’t have to start attempting to replicate my mp3 collection in vinyl form.
Finally I heard the Purple Radio Takeover of Big Chill Radio at the festival a few years back and decided it looked like far too much fun to be ignored – I told them I’d be back playing with them the following year, and I wasn’t too far wrong .
Describe your style: As the card says, I aim to bring you the finest in funksoulhiphopreggaebreakybasswobble – so it’s a bit all over the shop. The unifying factor tends to be having an interesting drum line, as I played kit for a decade before I ever got my hands on a pair of turntables.
Do you play out?: Whenever I get the chance! Mostly in and around Bristol, so you’ll likely find me playing at the Big Chill Bristol bar, Bocabar, the Pipe & Slippers and anywhere else they’ll have me …
Kit, (for the nerds!): I’m currently using Traktor Scratch Pro 2 controlled by a 2x Technics 1210s and a Vestax VCI100SE running Ean Golden’s DJTechtools midi mapping. I’ve modded the controller to run some different firmware and as I had the box open to do that I’ve also added a Pro-X Crossfader.
Yes, I am a bit of a gear whore …
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: The aforementioned Nextmen obviously & Mr Scruff just for their sheer musical eclecticism, J Dilla & Pete Rock for their sublime production skills and James Brown ..well, for being James Brown
First record bought: I didn’t really start buying vinyl until recently, and that’s only because there are some tracks I can only get that way so it’s a bit of a duff question for me - according to my Mum I did have a copy of the Wombles on 7″, but I don’t think I bought that …
As far as CD & tapes go, I used to be a complete and utter Metal fan when I started buying music, so it was Guns N Roses / November Rain as the first single, and Soundgarden / Superunknown for the first album.
Best DJing moment: I’m still a little green when it comes to playing out compared to some round here, but I reckon playing on the main stage of Festinho, just before Ugly Duckling last year has got to rate pretty highly, as I’m a huge fan of theirs.
Name drop for us: I can be found drinking beer and playing tunes with Ninja Tune resident DJ Moneyshot most Thursdays at the Flipzilla night at the Pipe and Slippers in Bristol …
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : You can find links to them on Soundcloud and up on the Sherlock Ohms blog
Current dancefloor killer: Featurecast /Sniper for sure … mashing up Pharoah Monche / Simon Says and the Ganja Kru / Super Sharp Shooter was inspired
All time top 5: Gah - I hate doing things like this, there are so many great records. OK, first 5 off the top of my head …
Aretha Franklin / Rocksteady
The Pharcyde / ‘93 Til Infinity
Stevie Wonder / Superstition
Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth / They Reminisce Over You
Roots Manuva / Witness (One Hope)
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : I think the bloke puking down the back of the girl in front of him last time I played at the Thekla was probably the grimmest thing I’ve ever seen – he kept on dancing as well!
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: I’m on fortnightly Tuesdays 10pm-12pm
Meet The DJ #3 – Rob Orchard
Name: Rob
How many years in the game? : About 18, but music has always been part of my life
What got you into DJing? : Student radio. I had a bunch of mates who used to disappear midway through a night down the pub once a week to go and broadcast their show. If it was something so good you’d leave the pub for it, I wanted to get involved! So in 1993, Rob on the Radio was born, on University Radio Falmer, which was Sussex Uni’s radio station. The radio stopped when I left uni, but I carried on making compilation tapes and mixes for anyone who’d listen until Purple Radio came along.
Describe your style: Eclectic. Someone once said to me “play what you enjoy”, but really enjoy a lot of house / big beat, a lot of chilled stuff, and I’ve got a (not so) secret indie side to me too.
Do you play out?: Every now and then whenever people ask. I’m also involved with Brighton Album Club, which is a twice-a-month classic album night.
Kit, (for the nerds!): A pair of Technics 1210s, and a Vestax VMC002 mixer. Traktor on the PC for broadcasting.
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: David Holmes, Saint Etienne, The Soulsavers – people who seem to have bottomless record collections of amazing records which people have never heard of!
First record bought: I can’t remember the first piece of vinyl I bought – something embarrassing which I’d put down to my early years, no doubt – but I remember the first CD I bought, which was the single of Get The Message by Electronic.
Best DJing moment: Playing on Thursday night on Big Chill FM in 2007. It was a Purple Radio takeover for the night, and I was absolutely bricking myself. All the fear disappeared when I dropped my first tune though.
Name drop for us: I was in the pub last weekend with Martin Duffy from Primal Scream, trying to get him down for the next Brighton Album Club, where we’re going to play Screamadelica. Unfortunately, he’s on tour in Leicester that night.
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes? : There’s a few in the mixes section on the PR website. I really should put together another one soon though.
Current dancefloor killer: Future Me by Le Corp Mince de Francois – Baggy reinvented for 2011, fronted not by Mancs, but by a pair of Finnish sisters (regular listeners to my shows might note a penchant for female fronted scandinavian tunes!)
All time top 5:
New Order - Regret
Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Bjork - Venus as a Boy
Happy Mondays - Wrote for Luck
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed? : New Years Day at the Big Chill Bar. Casualty central.
And finally, when can we catch you on Purple Radio?: Monday Nights 8-10
Meet the DJ #2 – Lenodd
Name: Lenodd
How many years in the game? : 19…from the halcyon days of rave to my current ‘staying in is the new going out’ dj existence like many other late 30 something Dads…
What got you into DJing? : Going out clubbing and wanting to hear some of those tunes again. I started out as a raver going to beach parties and big do’s in the northwest. After collecting tons of mixtapes and meeting a mate at Uni who’d blagged some decks, I decided to get spinning. Got a student loan, bought my decks and started collecting wax. Played house parties, like everyone else, and graduated to doing clubs in Hull, Manchester and Birmingham, wherever and whenever I could get hooked up with a gig. Job changes meant I ended up working in Record and Tape Exchange in London for 3 or 4 years where I mixed with a ton of dj’s and musos and started exponentially increasing my record collection. It culminated with me playing out loads with a heap of residencies in London and one in Northern Ireland. Having kids meant calming down and Purple Radio is now my outlet for inflicting tunes on the rest of the world. I have to say, it’s been brilliant and if you don’t play on it, you should be asking yourself why you don’t.
So, these heaps of DJs from the Tape Exchange days – anyone we’d know?: Richard Sen, Sean P, Appleblim, Subway, to name but a few who worked there. The shop used to have loads of dj’s coming through selling off their promos – Ashley Beedle, Eddie T-M, Nathan Coles, Dimitri from Paris, and even ex-England keeper David James
Describe your style: A bit of everything – House music, breaks, beats, party bangers, Detroit techno, mashups, edits, most things deeeeeeep , dubstep (the tuneful stuff!) and drum and bass through to chill out, electronic and wibbly bits and bobs that take my fancy.
Do you play out?: I used to (see above), but fatherhood has meant scaling that down and now its only at PR events such as the excellent Siege Mentality at the Castle or Sundays at the Big Chill Bar on Brick Lane.
Kit, (for the nerds!): 2 x 1210’s, Vestax PMC mixer, Traktor Scratch Pro, a laptop, shure mic, Ableton Live, launchpad and a.n. other midi controller. I went on a long (and painful) journey from purely vinyl, through cdj’s, to ableton only and now its Traktor which gives the vinyl control over digital. At last I think I’m happy with what I’ve got; That’s bound to change next week.
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: Eclipse/renaissance-era Sasha, Greg Wilson, Andrew Weatherall, Carl Craig, Coldcut, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Grooverider, Rolando, Vertigo, Laurent Garnier, Basic Channel, ATCQ, Pete Rock and CL smooth, DJ Shadow, Scruff, the list could go on and on.
First record bought: Shakin’ Stevens – this ole house (the wrong kind of house unfortunately) – used to play it on an old mini record player pretending to do radio shows in my bedroom. First Album was ATCQ – Low End Theory – a masterclass in beats and rhymes that soundtracked me shuttling back and forth between my house and my girlfriends. First 12” was Slo Moshun: Bells of New York from 3 Beat in Liverpool – I still remember those piano’s even now and going up to the counter and demanding to buy it. When he said ‘£8 for an import’, I flinched, gave in and record buying consumed me for a long time afterwards. You can’t beat the feeling of hearing a tune out, going round the record shops and finally hunting down that tune. The Internet’s made it all too easy, but then again I just don’t have the time nowadays.
Best DJing moment: Anytime you play and you can suddenly feel the dancefloor ‘get it’. It’s like ‘they’re locked, loaded and ready to party’. That’s what it’s about for me. Purple Radio at the Big Chill Bar on New Years Day playing with Monty was one of those – I still smile about it now.
Name drop for us: After redundancy, I was at a loose end. My housemate’s girlfriend had recently got into music management and before I knew it I was tour DJ for Royksopp on their first UK tour. Cue 2 weeks of driving round the UK opening up for them and hearing Eple in my sleep …
That Royksopp gig sounds fantastic, how did that come about?: Housemate’s girlfriend was managing them and they needed a dj because they’d never toured here before, I was just available as I had been made redundant, gave her a cd, they said yes and off we went – Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow, Norwich (!) was shitting myself as they were big old venues but was a lot of fun to do and top experience. Plus, they were cool guys. I played a ‘Those Norweigans’ record at one point and Svein Berge came out, nodding approvingly and said “I made that!”
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes?:
http://www.bmbx.org/category/lenodd/ & http://www.collectivedischarge.blogspot.com/
Current dancefloor killer: Julio Bashmore – Battle for Middle you
All time top 5: It’s a toughie, but today, Matthew, I’m picking:
Carl Craig – At Les
Pepe Braddock – Deep Burnt
Alter8 – Infiltrate 202
Sly and the Family stone – If you want me to stay
Pete Rock and CL Smooth – T.R.O.Y.
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed?: Probably me at a wedding; upending the bride attempting some sort of strictly move, falling on top of her and then crawling off to be sick somewhere. It was my duty as the usher really….
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: Monthly Saturdays with the originally titled ‘Saturday Night in’ with Mr Lovely.
Meet the DJ #1 – Mr Black
Ahoy!
Welcome to the first in a new series of ‘meet the DJ’ style interviews, where you’ll get to know a little bit more about your Purple Radio idols. I’ll be donning the Jeremy Paxman hat (and accompanying sneer) for this series, so sit down, get a brew on, and prepare to be astounded, amazed and no doubt occasionally appalled at the antics of some of the miscreants that spin records on Purple Radio.
First up it has to be the man, the legend, the head honcho of Purple Radio, it’s the self proclaimed aging diso-dolly/mindless killing machine, Mr Black!
Name: Mr Black
How many years in the game?: I’ve been buying records since my pre-teen years (I’m now the wrong side of 40, doh) and have been DJing, with varying levels of interest/enthusiasm, it must be said, since I conned my best mate into going halves on a pair of Ariston belt-driven rotary pitch turntables about 20 years ago. He was a big record buyer and had great taste but just could not get his head around beatmixing – but I still managed to talk him into upgrading to Technics 1200s about a year later, hahaha (the mug).
What got you into DJing?: Clubbing and wanting to keep the party going for as long as possible afterwards, mainly. Back in the day (ahem) mixtapes were a rare commodity so they were obsessed over and listened to time and time again until I knew them inside out. Of course, the next step was to try to obtain all of the records featured on those tapes – not an easy task in the pre-internet/snotty record shop assistant days. Naturally, just having the records wasn’t enough then – it was on to making my own mixtapes. Again, something else to obsess over. From then on I was hooked. Every Friday evening and all day Saturday was spent in record shops, paying silly money for records that I hardly ever got to play outside of my bedroom – but loving every minute of it, all the same. Compared to now there were very few DJ bars about in the early 90s. It was just clubs with already established DJs, so the opportunities to play out were ultra-slim. But like anything, if you keep at it the breaks eventually come and I played enough house parties, one-off gigs and wine bars to keep it fun and worthwhile. But the live gigs died a death when the kids came along as my mates, who were also all in the family way, lost interest in going out – so it was just me, my records and my bedroom once again. Until Purple Radio came along, that is
Describe your style: Wonky disco with added party bangers when I’m playing out. Balearic gems, songs (yes, songs!) and anything else I fancy when I’m on t’radio.
Do you play out?: Aye, monthly at Siege Mentality in Aldgate (the strictly vinyl affair that my giant Italian wife Andrea runs) and at various Purple Radio parties and associated events all over the country (we’ve had some cracking road trips). I’ve also been lucky enough to play at the Big Chill festival and Festinho, too. Both fantastic experiences.
Kit, (for the nerds!): I have neither the time nor the attention span to get into the geekery side of DJing. Playing CDs is fine but all I need is two turntables and a mixer. NO SURRENDER.
DJ/Musical Heroes/Inspiration: Harvey, Sean Rowley, Scruff, Radcliffe & Maconie, Moonboots, Sasha (at one time), Shadow, David Holmes and anyone who puts the time, effort and expense in to hunting down tracks rather than accepting a ropey mp3 downloaded off the internet as good enough (it isn’t).
First record bought: 7″ of My Perfect Cousin by The Undertones – mainly because it had a picture of a subbuteo player on the sleeve; but it’s still a great record, mind. First 12” was (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang by Heaven 17 (pants) and my first album was Duran Duran’s Rio, which I still have and play. I was really lucky growing up as my older brother and sister were big music fans, so I had access to lots of music years before I was old enough to buy any myself. My love of The Beatles comes from my brother’s obsession with buying EVERYTHING they ever did. He kindly (stupidly) gave me a large chunk of his collection about 10 years ago. It’s worth a fookin fortune but it’s staying with me, of course.
Best DJing moment: In recent memory I’d say it was playing alongside Andrea on Big Chill FM at last summer’s festival. It was Sunday night/Monday morning and we’d just finished a 4 hour back-to-back session in one of the bars (with me on a Henry from Goodfellas paranoid tip) and had to head straight over to BCFM for a 2 hour slot on the radio. At that point the station’s (big ass) PA was the only music still booming out across the site, so we were met by 500 + munted Big Chillers who were refusing to let the weekend end. The next couple of hours were just amazing and I shall forever be in Andrea’s debt for talking me down and making it all okay, hahaha.
Name drop for us: I’ve been out on the lash with Tyres from Spaced (and crashed on his sofa). He’s one of my brother’s best pals.
Where can we listen to your musics/mixes?: Archived shows and one-off mixes are hosted here: http://postbocks.com/user/Mr+Black/mixes
Current dancefloor killer: Bit old now but I’m still loving DJ Nature ~ Destiny Reprise. IMMENSE.
All time top 5: Only 5? Bah. Okay, Stevie Wonder ~ Do I Do, Todd Terje ~ Eurodans, Commodores ~ Machine Gun, Hamilton Bohannon ~ Let’s Start The Dance Again, Michael Jackson ~ Rock With You
What’s your ‘most shocking’ dancefloor moment witnessed?: Dancefloor spit-roast. Taking ‘lost in music’ to a whole new level.
And finally, when can we catch you on PR?: Friday nights 10 ’til midnight and Sundays 2 ’til 3.30. I also provide a monthly 60 minute guest mix for Marky’s superb Saturday Soul show – as should you, too!
Purple Radio Bangers

King Britt vs. Michelle Shaprow ~ If I Lost You (Scuba mix)
A long-time favourite of many DJs on the station, this still crops up regularly on playlists and always gets a great reception at our live gigs and gurn-ups. Warm keys and that skippity beat together with super-sultry vocals from the very easy-on-the eye Ms. Shaprow make for a very tasty banger indeed.
Turn it up and enjoy.
Cheers
Blackie
The Mystery Mix is back!

Each month a Purple Radio DJ will entertain, educate and no doubt sometimes baffle with an hour long mix from the farthest corners of their music collection. Hidden album tracks, great cover versions, forgotten B sides, soundtrack snippets, obscure remixes and ‘before they were famous’ tracks are very much the order of the day. So notebooks at the ready as it’s Guey digging deep this month.
the svelte selection – Feb 2011 goodness
Hello dearest listeners and listeners-to-be,
Hope you’re coping with February, keeping warm (if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere) or cool (for the Antipodes) and managing to have some lovely times whereever you are.
I’ve mostly been going to school, seeing some music but buying very little and waiting for Spring. I feel my musical mojo is slowly returning after a very very slow start to the year (I bought ONE new album in January – scary) – should be in full swing by March. Just in time for Bloc Weekend
This month’s show centres mostly on recent and upcoming gigs, but there’s quite a bit of new music in there as well. I’m improbably excited about the upcoming tUnE-yArDs album, for example, and so pleased that she let us have a sample. The last hour or so is nice and chilled, but I warn you, the first half an hour is rather, erm, fruity…
As usual you have the choice of downloading the full two hour show or grabbing some of the tunes played, avoiding the chat, from Spotify. Or you can do what I usually do when presented with two options, take both.
The tracklisting:
1. DJ Rashad – Who Da Coldest from Itz Not Rite (Planet Mu)
